Why did Healthscope decide to terminate the contract in the first place?
Healthscope, which operates a network of 38 hospitals across Australia, was unable to reach an agreement with the Australian Health Service Alliance (AHSA), leading to the termination of their contract. Healthscope initiated this decision, as they sought higher fee increases than those agreed upon with the AHSA in March 2024.
Health funds and hospitals typically establish contracts to ensure health fund members can access high-quality care without incurring out-of-pocket expenses for hospital and operating theatre services. These agreements often provide payments above the minimum rates in exchange for hospitals waiving costs for patients. In Australia, nearly all private hospital services operate under such contracts, ensuring patients avoid unexpected expenses.
On behalf of Westfund, AHSA manages hospital contract negotiations, including discussions with Healthscope. Our priority was to achieve a resolution that benefited our members and continued to provide them with affordable access to quality healthcare.
What does this new agreement mean for me?
There will be no change for Westfund members who attend any of Healthscope’s 38 hospitals across Australia. This agreement means our members remain covered as per their policy, with no additional out-of-pocket hospital costs*.
Are there any changes to my next steps if I have treatment booked or looking to book treatment at a Healthscope hospital?
No, there’s no change to the booking process if you already have a treatment booked or are planning to book treatment at a Healthscope hospital. You can go ahead as planned with your arrangements. All doctors have been notified about the new contract.
*Just a reminder - waiting periods, excesses, exclusions or restrictions do apply to your hospital cover. Check your Policy Summary on Members Online or on our app for more information.
